Ilmington Parish Council

IPCIlmington has a long history much of which is visible in its housing.  All the earliest housing was built of iron stone, dug from local quarries, much of it shows of earlier times.  Aconites /shells can be seen in the stone itself.  These earlier buildings were likely to be thatched – it being the cheapest available material.  Stone slate roofs were also used. These can still be seen in some of our notable houses; such as the Manor, Crab Mill and the Dower House.

As time progress and transport became simpler, brick was introduced and many houses now have brick facades and chimneys.  Some are built completely of brick as bricks were considered very fashionable in the 19th century.  The building material used in the 20th century changed little, although some social housing employed rendering over the brickwork.  Roofs of many buildings have been raised to accommodate upper floors and as a result new roofing materials such as slate or tile are evident.

Today, Ilmington is a mix of social housing, rented and privately owned properties.  An example of this can be found at the recent building project at Larkstoke Grange on the Armscote Road.  Houses built over the past 50 years now makes use of Cotswold stone dug from higher in the Cotswold Hills and is much lighter in colour.  Roofs tend to be clad in plain clay / cement tiles or reproduction stone slates.  As highlighted in the Ilmington Parish Plan, most parishioners believe it is imperative to maintain the use of stone for house building in order to maintain the Village’s integrity and historic character.
